‘In the workings of the human imagination, adaptation is the norm, not the exception’

– Hutcheon & O’Flynn, 2012

‘Stories, great flapping ribbons of shaped space-time, have been blowing and uncoiling around the universe since the beginning of time. And they have evolved. The weakest have died and the strongest have survived and they have grown fat on the retelling.’

– Terry Pratchett, 1991

ResearchWorks at Guildhall School of Music & Drama is pleased to host Artists as Adaptors, a day-long symposium for artists in research contexts to explore different facets of adaptation in their work.

A wide range of practices are represented, including film, literature, visual art, choreography, composition, and piano performance. Topics covered include found materials, ekphrasis, memoir, Ballardian landscapes, ecopoetics, narrative, queer theory, and improvisation.

Papers, performances, film viewings, and workshops will be delivered by Emily Orley, Conor Wilson, Clare Harvey, Aristotelis Maragkos, Dabanjali Biswas, Amanda Douge, Matthew Kaner, Ed Rice, and Bobby Mitchell.

In the afternoon, the composer David Fennessy will deliver the keynote talk on his epic and visionary piece Conquest of the Useless for mezzo-soprano, actor, orchestra & electronics, inspired by Werner Herzog’s memoir Conquest of the Useless, Reflections from the making of Fitzcarraldo.

Mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee & snacks provided.

Supported by Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Leverhulme Trust, via a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship.
